Building the Culture of Peace

African Heritage and Global Peace Initiative as a Peace Ambassador Non- Governmental Organization delve into concept that could promote peace all over the world. Peace is not an absent of war, conflict in the society but it is what should characterize the conduct of individuals in the society in the face of conflict and disharmony.

Culture of Peace as defined by the United Nations, ‘’Culture of Peace is set of values, attitudes, modes of behavior and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals groups and nations”.

UNESCO on the other hand asserted that, “Since wars, conflicts begins in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that, the defenses of Peace must be constructed.’’

It is upon this cardinal point, that African Heritage and Global Peace Initiative build the Culture of Peace through training, consultation and dialogue in the society.

The concept of a Culture of Peace has now grown into a global movement. Within the Culture of Peace framework, Peace embraces far more than an absence of conflict. It encompasses tolerance, disarmament, sustainable economic and social development, democratic participation, gender quality, freedom of expression and respects for human rights.

The transition from a culture of war to a culture of Peace requires the transformation of individual’s behavior as well as institutional practices. Learning to live in peace and harmony is a matter of life time process and begins with the development of inner peace and nurturing attitudes that promote the expansion and integration of peaceful principles. African Heritage And Global Peace Initiative play a key role in building the culture of peace through education and awareness.

Intercultural Dialogue Initiative

Our world today is more and more interconnected but this does not imply that, individuals and societies are really living together as one today. The principle of intercultural dialogue is to affirm that “all human races are one family under God irrespective of their cultural differences or background”.

Lack of human understanding has become a critical problem of cultural differences which over times, resulted to barriers of prejudice in the society. The aim of Intercultural Dialogue Education is to reconciliate people of different cultural background all over the world and foster peace among the nations of the world. “Our cultural diversities is our strength and not weakness.’’ As the trend of interconnection across and between societies becomes thicker, and cultural diversity is increasingly recognized as an inescapable reality of modern life, it is very important that, stakeholders at all levels are equipped with the capacities and knowledge to positively manage diversity and pluralism for the benefit of all human kinds.

Intercultural dialogue involves around core concepts hub which include the following: Intercultural, cultural literacy, intercultural literacy, intercultural citizenship, learning to live together, communication, communication competence, cultural identity, resilience, dialogue, culture, language, values, beliefs and attitude.
